The beast of Dufftown! The richest yet most refined malt of them all. But what does this mean to the drinker? Morltach has a very special distillation regime distilling 2.51 times as opposed to the widely used 2 times. The shape of it’s stills would generally make for a heavy spirit but because of this extra .51 times distilling some of the rough stuff has been polished down by the stills. Mortlach lends itself to both Sherry and ex-bourbon casks, excelling in nuanced malty sweetness and thick, smooth mouthfeel.
Nose: Wow, a great example of American oak sweetness. Preserved lemon and French vanilla Greek yoghurt lead, while roast drippings and toasted coconut follow behind.
Palate: The front palate holds all the sweet of the cask with notes of coconut ice-cream and yoghurt candy, which is then followed by the classic Mortlach notes of roast beef crust and Yorkshire pudding.
Finish: Memories of a searing hot BBQ grill.
Hart Brothers can trace their origins in the licensed trade back to the late 19th century when the family were licensed victuallers and publicans in Paisley, the mill town on the outskirts of Glasgow. It was not until 1964 that brothers Iain & Donald Hart incorporated the company as Wine & Spirit Wholesalers and Scotch Whisky Blenders. Alistair Hart joined the company in 1975 and it was his responsibility as chief blender to source vintage casks of single malt whisky that were not readily available through any specialist whisky shop or online whisky site.
