Just outside Elgin lies the Benriach distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland. The spirit from Benriach is full of tropical fruit notes unlike any other distillery in Scotland. When treated the right way it’s like pineapple and kiwi fruit salad. In this case a Portuguese Port cask has been used to enhance and further accentuate these fruit influences, giving a grape-y lift to fill out the mouth feel.
Nose: Hot caramel fudge and sweet marsala. After time in the glass, a bit of celery salt and fresh strawberry.
Palate: Warm strawberry jam on rye bread to start, the entire baking spice cupboard to follow. A crisp acidity on the mid palate reminiscent of a tart green apple.
Finish: Loads of green barley.
Hart Brothers can trace their origins in the licensed trade back to the late 19th century when the family were licensed victuallers and publicans in Paisley, the mill town on the outskirts of Glasgow. It was not until 1964 that brothers Iain & Donald Hart incorporated the company as Wine & Spirit Wholesalers and Scotch Whisky Blenders. Alistair Hart joined the company in 1975 and it was his responsibility as chief blender to source vintage casks of single malt whisky that were not readily available through any specialist whisky shop or online whisky site.
